News Release December 6, 2013 - Montross, Virginia --- Peoples Community Bank announces its sponsorship of How To Do Your Banking at Washington & Lee High School for the 2013/2014 school year.
How to Do Your Banking is a seven-lesson financial skills course published by Cemark, Inc. of Midlothian, VA, and used by business teachers Stan Schoppe, Jr. and Tracy White to supplement their regular business finance curriculum.

Students learn to make wise financial decisions with this program, through practical lessons on saving, budgeting, basic investments, navigating electronic banking, reconciling an account, obtaining and maintaining credit, and avoiding identity theft.

Peoples Community Bank is sponsoring How To Do Your Banking as a public service because “we feel it is important that young adults have a chance to practice all aspects of money management in the classroom, where mistakes won’t cost real dollars,” said Randy Phelps, Vice President of Retail Banking.

“Surveys indicate 84 percent of high school students want instruction in financial matters, only 1 in 3 teens knows how to read a bank statement, balance a checkbook or pay bills, and that financial education is among the top three subjects parents want taught to their children,” Phelps added.

Peoples Community Bank is also investing a day of mentoring at the high school, with Branch Manager and Loan Officer, Jen Dixon, teaching lesson’s on credit in classrooms. Mrs. Dixon has assisted Mr. Schoppe and Ms. White with teaching this program for the past several years at Washington & Lee High School.

“By sponsoring How To Do Your Banking, we are preparing our young people before they begin to live independently and are in need of financial services. If we can help them learn good money habits right from the start and raise their level of financial responsibility, it will pay big dividends for them and our community,” said Dixon.

Peoples Community Bank is a full service bank with assets in excess of $150 million, and branches located in Montross, Warsaw, Dahlgren, King George, and Fredericksburg, VA. Equal Housing Lender and member FDIC.

SNL Financial rates Peoples Community Bank the "best bank in America for having the lowest loan rate on a new or used car loan among banks and thrifts surveyed across the nation."  PCB’s President and CEO, Robert K. Bailey, III said, “While many quoted news sources say banks aren’t lending in this economy, Peoples Community Bank has over $16 million ready to lend and is actively seeking qualified borrowers.”  PCB's Senior Lending Officer, William Ware, III says, “...strong lending campaigns such as the auto loan program at 1.90%, the home equity line program at 3.25%, and the commercial loan program with rates as low as 4.00% enable us to continue to provide excellent value and quality service for years to come. We invite those interested to visit any one of our five branch locations and experience community banking as it existed in the past and still does today at Peoples Community Bank.”

We also recently participated in the “Sponsors for Success” program at Cople Elementary School by adopting 22 wonderful children in Mrs. Boarman’s 4th grade class.  They all signed & submitted a Citizenship Pledge, which states they will work hard to do all the things that will help make them good citizens. We will be working closely with Mrs. Boarman to encourage them to keep their pledge & making monthly visits to talk to them on behalf of the Bank. These kids are remarkable & are so excited to have Peoples Community Bank as their sponsor for this year!  The entire Bank is behind them as they work to be “good citizens”!

Peoples Community Bank Staff Members Celebrated
Teach Children to Save Day ...

... with 115 Kindergarteners!

We discussed the difference between needs and wants, talked about saving,  and if they had piggy banks. We explained what a savings account is and how they can get one, then read a story called "Alexander Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday."  It was also career week in the school, so we shared with the students about our jobs and many other jobs in the bank.  It was a fun and exciting day!
